This award, generously funded by the long-time Sociology Department professor Robert Avery and Minnie Avery, awards students who excel in sociology. The award is annually given to a sociology major who has achieved excellent grades in sociology courses and who has made a significant contribution to the department. In addition to the winner, a runner-up is also recognized. The names of both winner and runner-up are carved into a plaque on the wall of the Sociology Department, and a modest financial award is offered. Awardees are honoured at a ceremony around April, at a reception for graduating Sociology majors and minors.
There is no application process for this award; the winners are determined by a committee of professors within the department.
