Student Wins Award from Center on Race and Social Problems

Sociology undergraduate student, Corey Brooks (previously Madison Scull), won the 2019 Best Student Paper Award from the Center on Race and Social Problems for the paper “Eduardo Bonilla-Silva, Environmental Racism, Sustainability and the Flint Water Crisis.” The paper was written in SOC 1500, “Capstone Research Practicum,” Spring, 2019, taught by Joshua Bloom.

This paper applies Bonilla-Silva’s theory of “colorblind racism” to analyze the history of Flint, Michigan leading up to the water crisis. The paper previously won the Sociology Department’s 2019 Senior Capstone Award.
