Professor Hughes Appointed Sociology Program Officer at National Science Foundation

Melanie Hughes is a new rotating sociology program director with the National Science Foundation, a position that she will hold for one or two years. In this role, Professor Hughes will maintain the sociology program’s multi-million dollar grant portfolio. She will help manage the NSF merit review process to determine which sociology proposals are recommended for funding. She will work alongside program directors in other divisions and directorates to promote scientific discovery and pursue NSF’s other strategic objectives. She will conduct outreach to inform sociologists around the country about NSF, how it works, and how to submit proposals. While in her position, Professor Hughes will also continue her scholarly research and continue to advise graduate students at the University of Pittsburgh.
