Jackie Smith has been named Fulbright Canada Research Chair in Globalization and Cultural Studies at McMaster University’s Institute on Globalization and the Human Condition (2020-2021 cycle). Her research on Globalization, Human Rights & Cities in the 21st Century will contribute to research and practice involving connections between global and local politics. During the spring 2021 term, she will be completing a book on the global human rights city movement and how it challenges the prevailing model of economic globalization by advancing a people-centered human rights project. Her study builds upon participatory research with Pittsburgh’s Human Rights City Alliance and the U.S. Human Rights Cities Alliance. The Fulbright fellowship will enable Smith to include additional research on human rights and housing struggles in Canadian cities.
